D-Crew shift manager Jim Spalding has been employed by Norske Skog for 38 years, both in the Tasman Mill and over the ditch in Australia. He said he had loved his time working with the crew in Kawerau and had enjoyed working alongside them to solve problems and meet the challenges that came with running a paper machine. The D-Crew are a tight-knit bunch and Spalding expects those friendships will continue despite the closure of the mill. Spalding has fond memories of Christmas functions in which D-Crew chartered fishing boats and then gathered at team-member Tuwhakairiora (Tu) O’Brien’s house to cook up their catch for the men’s families.
FIRE crews tackled a blaze for three hours at Halbeath after a summer house set alight. Alistair Wood alerted the emergency services when a neighbour saw smoke billowing out of the roof of the building in his garden at Long Row around 4.15pm last Wednesday. The 70-year-old told the Press that he was thankful that the emergency was not more serious. However, the incident has sparked fresh concerns by neighbours on the street regarding access to the road, which is north of the level crossing and off Kingseat Road. A fire engine was held at the level crossing over the Fife Circle line for approximately one minute, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed.
