Public Health Experts Beg for Patience

Sandy Hausman reports. On Wednesday, Blue Ridge Health Department Director Denise Bonds was telling people there was enough vaccine to meet demand, but late that afternoon she and other districts learned that – in fact – supplies were being cut. “There are five million Virginians who are currently eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, she explained.  Virginia gets, each week, 105,000 doses for the whole state, so you can see there is considerable demand and not much supply.” The state’s vaccine coordinator, Danny Avula, said that situation would change. We are hearig from the federal government that this is likely what we can expect for the next few weeks at least.  The Biden administration has come in and said we re going to get 100 million doses in 100 days. Some of that will happen because of the entry of new vaccines.  Some of it may happen because of increased production by Pfizer and Moderna, he told reporters.

Up to 30 Businesses Could Close Permanently in Mecosta County

9 & 10 News December 9, 2020 The Mecosta County Development Corporation says up to 30 local businesses could close permanently due to the impact of these shutdowns. “I’m really concerned about losing our businesses in our community,” says Carlleen Rose, owner of the Old Pioneer Store & Emporium in downtown Big Rapids. Jim Sandy, president of the Mecosta County Development Corporation, says for months, local businesses have struggled. Now, with the recent shutdown, 30 local businesses could close. “I’m really kind of surprised by the reaction to this, that people were like this is unexpected. Sure, this is expected. When you cut people off and basically this last action, this extension, pushed a few people off the cliff,” says Sandy.
