Earlier this year, a group of experts from RAND and the Special Competitive Studies Project launched a new wargame effort around China s invasion of Taiwan—but unlike most D.C.-based wargames, this effort heavily involved members of the commercial technology sector, in order to understand what near-term capabilities might be brought to bear on a Taiwan scenario.
RAND and the Special Competitive Studies Project brought together technology experts from outside the Pentagon to help run a wargame around China and Taiwan. These are the findings.
“The issue is, can the department execute this strategy and really do it in time?” said Jim Mitre, he director of the international security and defense policy program at the RAND Corporation. "In particular can it do so on a timeline that's sufficient to deter war with China, not just in some far-off future, but in the next few years?”
Given the immense stakes of entering these uncharted waters, it may make sense to explore what kind of new understanding might be reached between Washington, Beijing, and Taipei.
