WEED, Calif. Firefighting efforts on the Lava Fire are paying off, and fire officials say that people who evacuated from the Lake Shastina area should be able to return home tonight or tomorrow as crews secure their lines along the fire s western flank.
Conditions in the fire area shifted into fire crews favor on Thursday, with a layer of smoke from the Salt Fire to the south helping to block out the direct sunlight and reduce fire activity. It s a mixed blessing, however, as the smoke layer can prohibit airtankers from safely attacking the fire directly.
