Six Years in the Making, Lupe Drops on HBO This Friday

The new film Lupe has had a long journey to getting seen. It originally premiered at Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose back in 2019 and now will be available to stream this Friday on HBO. The directorial debut of André Phillips and Charles Vuolo, the film tells the story of Rafael (Rafael Albarrán), a Cuban immigrant and boxer who must search for a missing family member in New York City all while coming to terms with their transgender identity. It also features Celia Harrison as Lana, a transgender artist and performer. In addition to playing a role, Harrison serves as a thematic advisor to the film.

Dr. Julio CapÃ³ Jr. began his career as a journalist. The Miami-native is now a transnational historian, and much of research is at the intersection of immigration, race, gender, and sexual orientation. I m a gay man and I m Latino and so these were kind of questions that were personal for me in a lot of key ways, CapÃ³ said. The University of Southern California hosted Capo s presentation on these converging topics dating back to 1890. I put the story of queer LGBTQ people from Latin America and Caribbean descent at the center of that story, he said. The story we understand to be immigration history people who are LGBTQ are often left out of that story.
