The Washington Post on May 11 announced the proposed offshore wind farm off the coast of Marthaâs Vineyard received the green light. Itâs the first of 14 wind farms proposed by President Joe Biden to be approved. Itâs estimated that when all 62 turbines are operating, the Marthaâs Vineyard wind farm will provide sufficient electricity for 400,000 homes. Congratulations, Mr. Biden.
As with all wind farms and solar farms, the question to be asked is what will generate the electricity for those homes when the wind does not blow and the sun does not shine? If the answer is that the backup source for generating electricity is natural gas, coal or oil, then itâs very unlikely such projects will cause a net reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.
