0 in. i ll have more later in the situation room. 5:00 p.m. eastern. brooke baldwin continues our coverage right now on cnn. here we go, breaking news. i m brooke baldwin and you re watching all of this unfolding as we re hear from eyewitnesses, the most terrifying ordeal of their lives. let s explain what has been happening at los angeles international airport for the better part of an hour and a half, really panic and bloodshed. a shooting at lax. a couple items i need to pass along to you. first and foremost, a ground stop that is now in place, according to the faa. this all happened right around terminal three. gunshots rang out early this morning, right around 9:30 local time. we re hearing reports, this is from sources from one of our correspondents, deborah feyerick, that a gunman with a high-powered rifle entered terminal three and opened fire. shooting a tsa security agent. it is unclear, this is one of many things we do not know at this hour. whether or not that gunman ac
0 get as close as possible to the airport. you cannot simply drive up with this ongoing situation. miguel, are you there? reporter: it sounds like they are trying to shut down portions of the 405 and 110 in the area have the major highways that run through the region. the 405 specifically a major thoroughfare for commuters in los angeles. that might be happening now or in the process of happening. we re about i would say about a half mile away from where this incident took place trying to get to the airport entrance. it is completely gridlocked here. there are hundreds of cars in every lane. we have about seven helicopters and several news agencies as well as police and fire officials hovering up overhead. this area is a mess. it is gridlock. folks are being told to stay away. as we approached the airport on the thoroughfares that go on towards the airport property, we can see buses and cars are at this point confirm. where in the airport did this encounter take place? i think wh
0 the everybody is always thinking forward as to whether or not there s additional suspects. as we stand here now, there s only one individual responsible for this as we know as the active as that active shooter in our terminal. i want to follow up a little bit on what the mayor said regarding the officers that went in after this individual. this individual was shooting as he went into the into the terminal. the officers didn t i repeat, they didn t hesitate. they went after this individual and they confronted this individual in our airport. and unfortunately, it involved an officer-involved shooting but that s what needed to be done and that was heroic. we practiced to this not more than three weeks ago. we took everyone of our officers parks trol officers and couple hundred officers from the los angeles police department and we practiced the exact scenario time. there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and officer who was stationed at the airport. we also know tha
0 as far as we can tell, we have differing reports from e eyewitnesss about where the shooter was. some are saying that the shooter was confined to the area where the screening would take place. others say that the shooter got past the screening area. we know that the tsa agent was shot. the gunman was taken into custody on the tarmac and put in cuffs and that a third person is described as being down. we presume that person could be injured and there is ground traffic now and there were earlier reports of an all ground stop. we know, no flights are taking off. but at last report no flights taking off from anywhere at lax. lax. i have been talking to mark and audrey while you have been on the air. you don t have your shoe. you are wearing only one shoe. i was at the screening area. i was putting my belongings in the tray i had one boot off and i put my boot in the tray and we fell to the floor and on top of each other. it was like a dream it wasn t real it was like a movie. it was
story. because they could not shelter if they end up with that many people that are homeless looking for a place to stay. we re not going to be able to shelter them in that area with that impact. we have to move them to surrounding communities. we also have to bring a lot of resources from outside that area in to support that response. this goes back to national preparedness. there are scenarios that are so big for any jurisdiction to be prepared for it is impossible, how do you leverage those capabilities across, not just within a state but across state lines and in some cases nationally. so the work there that we work with cal-u is looking at that type of catastrophic planning. focus on how do we get to folks? life safety, looking at shelter needs and the fact that we re going to probably have to use a lot of capability outside the immediate area and then look at what it would take to stabilize to even set the stage for getting people back in and repopulating. it s a very c
