We cannot love someone unless we work for their best. In the case of racism, this means using our influence and means to promote the equality of all people, remembering that “God loves each of us as if there were only one of us” (St. Augustine).

On this day in 1977, the world changed forever. That was the day when we first saw on movie screens the words, âA long time ago in a galaxy far, far away . . .â Then came the iconic logo for âSTAR WARSâ and John Williamsâ unforgettable orchestral music I can hear in my mind as I type these words.
The movie received seven Oscars and grossed close to $800 million worldwide. It made Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Darth Vader as famous as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and John F. Kennedyâto younger audiences, perhaps even more so.Â
What we saw on movie screens, weâre now watching on the daily news.Â

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law earlier this week a measure prohibiting abortions in Texas as early as six weeks. The governor stated that the bill âensures that the life of every unborn child who has a heartbeat will be saved from the ravages of abortion.â The ban includes cases where the woman was impregnated as a result of rape or incest, but it allows an exception for medical emergencies. It takes effect in September, though pro-abortion activists have promised to challenge it.
A bill is also pending in Texas that would outlaw nearly all abortions if the Supreme Court were to overturn Roe v. Wade. This possibility may have moved closer to reality this week with news that the high court will hear a case many believe could effectively undermine Roe.
