cadman. jim, good morning. good morning, jose. the portrait of this gunman is complex. on the one hand a history of substance abuse, can t hold a job, depression. is this the sort of person who could easily be radicalized? it is really someone who could be influenced. they have the normal life pressures, certainly, and we all have these. you know we all have things where jobs are hard to keep or get, you know you run into problems like getting a dui arrest or substance abuse, but none of those are reasons for mass murder. this guy was clearly influenced by radicalism and extremism within his world view. you know we talk about isis. it may not be isis. that s the kind of current enemy we re facing but really it s the al qaeda virus was launched by bin laden and it s morphed into isis it s still in al qaeda, and it permeates from the taliban all over the world.

chattanooga. reporter: hi jose. police are looking at two of the gunman s acquaintances to see if they knew anything about what he was planning. they re also reviewing more details about the writings they uncovered, describing them as rambling pages that never reference any isis or al qaeda leaders specifically. meanwhile, the community continues to come together to mourn the five service members killed. what started as a makeshift memorial at the scene outside the attack has turned into something much larger thousands of people stopping by to pay their respect. we ve seen people break down in tears as they placed flags in the ground. we ve seen military members in full uniform stand stoically and salute the crosses representing those killed. it s just been a very emotional tribute and a very physical example of the grief and shock this community is feeling, jose. back to you. sarah, thank you very much. i want to bring in msnbc law enforcement analyst and retired special agent in
