FOCs are described as career and financial coaching service centers that help families living on a low to moderate income build effective money habits and focus on the financial bottom line. Groups that will be embracing the program in the local market include Towards Employment, The May Dugan Center and the Urban League of Greater Cleveland.
United Way and Towards Employment, a workforce development nonprofit, have identified eight 'social determinants of work:' five that have been previously defined (job flexibility, transportation, childcare, health care and sustained education), along with three they're adding (home and community health, broadband access and access to justice).
'We focused on the social determinants of work, not just education and training,' says Jill Rizika, executive director of Towards Employment. In 2011, the organization joined a national pilot that tested the WorkAdvance career pathway program across four communities.
