It’s the best, or rather worst, example of the bastardisation of a precious food tradition, one rooted in religion. The pancakes consumed on Shrove Tuesday are supposed to be about absolution, a cleansing of the store cupboard before the fasting days of Lent that lead to Easter, that critical date in the Christian calendar when believers remember the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus.
