Four intelligence officers from China's Ministry of State Security and a U.S. academic have been indicted over an alleged espionage scheme that targeted Chinese pro-democracy activists, Taiwanese independence advocates and others in the U.S. considered to be adversaries of China's communist party.
A US citizen and four Chinese intelligence officers have been charged with spying on Chinese dissidents, human rights leaders and pro-democracy activists residing in the United States.
Shujun Wang, 73, was arrested in March pending charges, which were filed on Tuesday in a federal court in Brooklyn. His four Chinese handlers remain at large. Wang faces 20 years if convicted.
