Ranchi: Jharkhand Police have carried out intensive operations in LWE-affected districts of the state leading to several encounters and arrests this year. Officials said nearly 70 operations have been carried out in Khunti district alone, resulting in the arrest of six PLFI members.
Khunti SP Ashutosh Shekhar said, “The PLFI has weakened after its top commander Jiden Gudia was eliminated last December. However, a group led by Laka Pahan is still operational in the area bordering Chaibasa. Another Maoist group led by Anal is also active in the Chaibasa-Seraikela-Khunti- Ranchi junction.”
Khunti Police also had an encounter with Laka Pahan’s group in February, in which four weapons and a large number of cartridges were seized.

RANCHI: Police on Wednesday confirmed that the extremist killed during an encounter in a forest near Ketari tola under Nagri police station of Ranchi district on Tuesday was PLFI area commander Punai Oroan.
Ranchi rural SP Naushad Alam said the family members of Oraon identified the body on Wednesday. He said the body would be handed over to the relatives following due procedures.
Alam said Ranchi Police received a tip-off on Tuesday that a PLFI group had entered the city with an intent to commit crime. He added that even as police were carrying out a checking drive in Nagri, four PLFI rebels fired at the police from two bikes and tried to flee.

Considered second in the PLFI rank, Jiden Gudia was active as an extremist for 15 years and carried a bounty of Rs 15 lakh on his head. An AK-47 rifle, dozens of cartridges, two walkie-talkies and other material were recovered from the spot.
Inspector general (operation) Saket Singh said, “After receiving inputs regarding movement of PLFI chief Dinesh Gope and Jiden, a police team was sent to the area for conducting search operations. On seeing the police, PLFI cadres opened fire and Gudia was killed in retaliatory fire while his accomplices managed to escape.”
