School City of East Chicago superintendent retiring after 32 years in the district

Details about Wright s last day were not discussed at Tuesday s meeting. Trustee Anton Williams thanked Wright for her work for the district over the past three decades. To go from being his Earth science teacher to being his boss as a principal and now working with her side by side as a school board member, he said Wright will never be forgotten. The district also approved a contract with Administrative Assistance LLC, a company that provides interim superintendent services on an as-needed basis. The services can be terminated with a written 14-day notice and compensation for those services is based upon the daily rate of the outgoing superintendent s salary, explained the district s attorney Jewell Harris Jr., at the meeting.

MERRILLVILLEÂ â The Town Court will be back in session. A preliminary injunction granted Thursday by Lake Superior Court Judge Bruce Parent requires the Town Council to immediately reinstate the court operations and reopen the online portal for litigants to pay fines and court costs. The order directs the council to make any necessary budget adjustments so the court can function. That includes paying court staff who lost their jobs when the court was closed almost a month ago. The preliminary injunction stems from litigation Merrillville Town Court Judge Eugene Velazco filed against the Town Council in response to the panelâs decision to shutter the court as of Dec. 31, 2020.

East Chicago delays in-person return for students; staff push back against classroom teaching requirement

EAST CHICAGO â The School City of East Chicago will join other Lake County school districts in Gary and Merrillville delaying its anticipated return to in-person learning as the coronavirus pandemic continues. School city Superintendent Dee-Etta Wright recommended Monday night that the district not return to in-person learning until at least mid-February. I m recommending that we postpone traditional school until Feb. 16, which is four weeks, Wright said in a Monday school board meeting. In the first board meeting in February, we will reevaluate the data, again, and we ll make a determination. The school board voted unanimouslyÂ in support of the superintendent s recommendations, which proved unpopular among staff who attended the Monday night meeting virtually.
