NEW DELHI: The alertness of one man CISF Head Constable Ravi Kant Avala posted at Nagpur Airport prevented a major mishap with the air ambulance that made a belly landing in Mumbai on Thursday night.
A turboprop operating as an air ambulance to ferry a patient from Bagdogra to Mumbai landed in Nagpur for refuelling at 4.30 pm. On getting airborne for Mumbai at about 5.50 pm, a rear wheel of the Beechcraft King Air C 90 came off the aircraft.
“Head Constable Ravi Kant Avala, who was deployed at watch tower near the runway, noticed the wheel falling off the aircraft. He immediately informed the security operational control centre, which in turn alerted the ATC. They then informed the pilot operating the turboprop about the missing rear wheel to the pilot. (Accordingly) arrangements were made at Mumbai airport for safe landing of the aircraft,” Central Industrial Security Force said in a statement.

According to the officials at the Mumbai International Airport Ltd, the non-scheduled aircraft, VT-JIL, was carrying a patient, 2 crew members, a doctor and a paramedic staff.
Soon after take-off, the nose-wheel of the aircraft fell off, forcing a diversion to Mumbai where it landed at 21:09 hrs amid full emergency preparedness.
