House approves anti-discrimination law on second reading

Jesus “Bong” Suntay, chairman of the House Committee on Human Rights, lauded the House leadership for directing the swift plenary approval of House Bill No. 8243 or the Equality and Non Discrimination on Race, Ethnicity and Religion Act. Suntay said the bill contains a number of provisions common among five legislative proposals filed on the subject.  Among the authors are Reps. Amihilda Sangcopan (Anak Mindanao); Cheryl Deloso-Montalla (NUP, Zambales), Edgar Aglipay (DIWA Partylist); and Jose Christopher Belmonte (LP, Quezon City).

Carlos Zarate said the recent flak received by the military for falsely accusing several University of the Philippines alumni as being members of the New People’s Army has triggered the need to determine how billions of pesos in intelligence and confidential funds are being spent by state security agencies. On the other hand, Quezon City Rep. Jesus “Bong” Suntay, said red tagging and directly linking individuals as members of communist organizations does not, in any way, justify intelligence fund disbursements. “The penchant of our military and police personnel of publishing list of individuals tagged as member of the New People’s Army must stop.  Clearly the intention is to show that with the intel funds they have accomplished their job,” said Suntay, chairman of the House Committee on Human Rights.

House panel asks DBP, Lopez Group to submit loan agreement docs on alleged condonation or write-off

Claudine Diana Bautista to ask the concerned camps to submit all the relevant documents, including a copy of the corporate rehabilitation plan.  “I manifest that we can request a position paper or any document coming from SPV (Special Purpose Vehicle)  Group and we can study their documents for the next hearing regarding this matter and also the contracts with the DBP covering the loans of Lopez Group,”  Bautista said.
