Selectmen plan to take pledge

Read Article BETHEL At their April 5 meeting, selectmen were asked by Catherine Ingraham if they’d be willing to take the Mahoosuc Pledge. On the Mahoosuc way website it says the pledge was “created by a core group of local organizations, together with statewide partners. Together, we are committed to creating a sustainable travel destination and ensuring we preserve local quality of life and community vitality. This pledge is part of our commitment to ensure these lands and ecosystems are able to be enjoyed for generations to come.” Ingraham also asked if the town would be willing to share a link to the Mahoosuc Pledge on its official website, so more people could take the pledge if they want to.

Panelists impressed by TFA presentation

Read Article REGION On Wednesday and Thursday of last week the Telstar Freshman Academy (TFA) presented their final projects to teachers and other members of the community in a think tank panel forum. The final projects wrapped up the TFA’s unit on innovation, collaboration and communication. The goal of the projects was to have students come up with solutions to worldwide issues currently plaguing large parts of the world population. This year freshmen tackled issues like global warming, clean water, homelessness and air pollution amongst others. After being split into groups of two or three people, students focused on the research end of the project before coming up with their solutions.

Some small businesses falling in the cracks of relief packages

“We closed on March 18, Hopkins recalled. It was a Wednesday. I will forever remember that date. As a new business owner, she said she hadn’t started taking an income yet.  I was right on the edge of doing that in March when everything kind of turned upside down, she added. So, Hopkins, like others in her position, immediately applied for the PPP loan and other grants. While she was able to get funding through the PPP, she was able to support her two employees but ran into other issues. Hopkins said her monthly rent is three times more than her monthly payroll expense and added the loan wasn t as helpful as it was for other businesses.

Chamber introduces Mountain Money eCard

Read Article BETHEL  The Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce has stepped up efforts to encourage shopping locally by introducing the Mountain Money eCard, a digital gift card that can be purchased online and used at any of list of 18 merchants and growing. “Shopping as locally as possible is always important, but right now we really have to ask ourselves, ‘who do we want to still be here when the pandemic is all over?’” said Jessie Perkins, executive director of the chamber. “The Mountain Money eCard is the ideal gift for anyone who lives locally or plans to visit the Bethel area and is committed to supporting its business community.”
