End-of-life care issues are complex and difficult, and in the realm of public policy where a zero-sum game over ethical alternatives is the norm these issues can further divide an already polarized nation. Too often, partisans frame the national debate as if the only choice were between patients receiving drastic interventions (such as being hooked up to a machine that artificially extends life indefinitely) or allowing physicians to assist in the suicides of their patients. There is, however, a wide area between these two extreme options.
