Emeline McClellan named Gates Cambridge Scholar

University of Georgia senior Emeline McClellan of Good Hope will continue her studies in classics this fall as one of 24 Americans selected as a Gates Cambridge Scholar. The scholarship fully funds postgraduate study and research in any subject at the University of Cambridge in England.
McClellan is UGA’s eighth Gates Cambridge Scholar in the program’s 20-year history. The scholarship, which recognizes intellectually outstanding postgraduate students with a capacity for leadership and a commitment to improving the lives of others, was established by a gift from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. jordany callahan and jessica hunt invited her into this home and officially put her down in the basement and her daughter and kept her down there. mom would come up and clean and do the laundry and go shopping for her. shea kept her down there and moved her to an upstairs room where they locked the doors at night, and eventually nailed the windows shut so mom and her daughter couldn t get out. scott, how did she get away? reporter: well, back in october, she was at a family dollar store, john, and she stole a candy bar. police arrested her. then she started talking to them over a period of time and basically said that people back at my house where i live, well, they re mean to me. remember, she has a mental disability, so police took their time questioning her and eventually handed her over to fbi investigators.
they started taking a look at it. they went back to the house and that s when everything started to unravel. had been she ever been reported missing? reporter: no, as far as we know, she wasn t reported missing. i believe her mom lives in ashland. occasionally she would go pack to that house. according to witnesses in the fbi court document, jessica and jordy would send somebody back over to her mother s house and bring her back. that s bizarre. you spoke to the lawyer for one of the defendants. what did he tell you? reporter: the lawyer tells me that these allegations are ludicrous. he was ready to go to trial over these same type of charges in county court. the charges were dropped, then the fbi indictment came down today. he tells me this young mother, 30 years old, could oh come and

learning this morning and what s a pretty confusing case here. it started off as a simple shoplifting case and turned into so much more. mother and daughter allegedly forced to live unthinkable horror and held against their will. inside this house, an ohio woman and her child deprived of their freedom, dignity and basic needs for a year and a half according to federal authorities. these individuals deprived this woman and her child of the most fundamental of american rights, freedom. this case is nothing less than a case of modern day slavery. reporter: 26-year-old jordie callahan, his girlfriend, 31-year-old jessica hunt and their friend daniel brown all charged with imprisoning a mentally disabled woman only identified as essie and her child. prosecutors say essie was forced to do household chores and threatened with a pit bull and and a python and according to a law enforcement source, she and her daughter were sometimes forced to eat dog food. talking about people who were
