1 healthcare solution? Expand health savings accounts

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services, the health share of the economy is projected to rise from 17.7 percent in 2018 to 19.7 percent in 2028. Yet the average life span has only grown two years since 2000. The U.S. is a global outlier. While we spend more than any other nation on health, and more than three times other wealthy nations, our life expectancy is shorter than countries that spend far less. Considering our expenditures are higher than any other nation with less than desirable results, we should begin to look at new avenues for health reform by examining health care regulations rather than continually increasing spending.

West Virginia legislature passes budget, fails to pass income tax reduction at session s end

by Tyler Arnold, The Center Square  | April 14, 2021 08:00 PM Print this article As the West Virginia legislative session came to a close, lawmakers successfully passed a budget bill, but failed to reach an agreement on how the state should reduce and eventually eliminate its income tax. The nearly $4.5 billion budget passed both chambers of the General Assembly and has been sent to Gov. Jim Justice’s desk for either his signature or amendments. The bill, as passed, cuts about $73 million from the governor’s proposal. Most of the budget debate surrounded a 1.5% cut to higher education. Although the state has a surplus, the earlier budget proposals tried to account for a proposed income tax reduction, which lawmakers never reached an agreement on. Gov. Jim Justice and lawmakers still intend to work on a compromise.
