Contemporary Arts Museum Houston reopens for the first time since March 2020 By Amber Elliott, Staff writer Contemporary Arts Museum Houston director Hesse McGraw didn’t underplay how emotional reopening would be. CAMH’s doors had been closed to the public since March 15. Visitors first returned on Feb. 25, nearly a year after the coronavirus pandemic forced most art institutions to shut down. “It’s been really difficult and challenging for many of our staff,” he admitted. “We’ve tried to really stabilize as much as we could. But this opportunity to reopen… it feels quite extraordinary. It’s something that our entire team has waited for.”

HOUSTON, TX .-Contemporary Arts Museum Houston will reopen its doors to the public at noon on Thursday, February 18, 2021, following a closure since March 16, 2020, due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. During this prolonged closure, CAMH has not only redesigned the exterior plaza at the intersection of Montrose and Bissonnet, but guests will be welcomed into a completely restored and renovated Brown Foundation Gallery as well. To ensure the health and well-being of its visitors and following the City of Houston’s guidance, the Museum will operate at a reduced visitor capacity and has implemented several new safety protocols. From the first major renovation in over two decades, to the launch of CAMHLAB, an artist-in-residency program established to fill the void left by pandemic-related closures of studio and performance spaces, Houston’s second-oldest art museum went to great lengths to prepare itself for the distant day it would be able to welcome visitors again.
