The city of Portland, Oregon will pay $2.1 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit stemming from the police-involved death of a Black teen in 2017.

Quanice Hayes on Wednesday (March 10) before approving the settlement during a City Council meeting. The 17-year-old’s death sparked widespread protests in 2017 and served as a flashpoint during months-long demonstrations over racial justice in summer 2020.
