Johnston is just one of the area’s auctioneers who have spent decades selling a plethora of items, ranging from objects found in homes to pieces of land. The job also is part of an industry that has changed quite a bit since Johnston and others began their careers.
Johnston, who retired from the education field in 1988, began H&J Auctions in 1992 with his partner, Ed Hess. Since that time, Johnston said that the Dubuque area has seen the number of auction businesses dwindle.

Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson has announced this year’s Deputy of the Year and Civilian Employee of the Year, according to KWWL. The Deputy of the Year was awarded to Detective Steve Haas. He was recognized for doing an exemplary job, getting certifications and training experience. The Employee of the Year was awarded to Jesse Meyer who is a Detention Officer. Meyer was recognized for his self motivation as well as his actions in saving the life of an inmate whose heart stopped due to a seizure in the intake area.
