Last night, Jamgrass Billy Strings concluded his 2021 Spring Tour last night with the third and final show of a three-night run at
Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama. Enhancing the experience of the tour’s final leg for all was an announcement.
No doubt dominating this third and final show of Strings’ tour was the thrice performed version of the Grateful Dead psychedelic masterpiece “Dark Star.” Strings and band kicked into the song mid-way through set two, giving it an intriguingly aggressive, though melodically pleasant, introductory energy. They then proceeded to reprise it twice in a monstrous sandwich of segues and improvisation which included a version of Black Sabbath’s “Planet Caravan” and his own songs “Ice Bridges,” a reprise after playing that on night one of the Alabama run, and “Spinning,” the name for the mysteriously trippy narration Strings monologues into

Billy Strings credits his fans in northern Michigan for helping him reach this high point in his career.

Now, fresh off his first Grammy Award, Strings said his fans in northern Michigan are a big reason why some call him the future of bluegrass music. Playing all those gigs in them bars and stuff man, that makes you a strong musician because you gotta play over everyone talking and stuff,” Strings said laughing.
“It really seems like the people of northern Michigan kinda shoved me in this little boat and shoved me off to sea and said, ‘Alright Billy, go!’”

As the week winds to a close, we are reflecting back with some thoughts about the undoubtedly historic run of musical performances that just occurred this past week at
Billy Strings’ “The Deja Vu Experiments,” which saw the bluegrass guitarist and his quartet play six consecutive shows at the rock palace, live-streamed to what was reported as over 30,000 viewers tuning in.
These Déjà Vu shows of course follow in the long-passed footsteps of The Grateful Dead, who performed on these same dates their own six night run at The Cap in 1971. But this week, the bridge across time and space was made, with the legendary venue being the vessel and sublime, musical creativity being the substance to power it up.
