The 65-year-old was re-elected as EHF President by the EHF Congress 2021 in Vienna on Friday. Wiederer’s second term as president will run until 2025. The Austrian was first elected in 2016 at the EHF Congress in St. Wolfgang, Austria, where he succeeded Jean Brihault from France. Wiederer had been the EHF’s Secretary General since 1992. The elections for the top positions in European handball were the focus on the first day of EHF Congress 2021.

On 22 April 2021, on the eve of the EHF Congress 2021 in Vienna, the EXEC’s final meeting of this electoral period took place. In between 21 additional EXEC meetings took place in which the future and current state of European handball was discussed, decided upon and shaped. Thursday’s meeting was an emotional one, in particular for outgoing Methods Commission chairman, Jerzy Eliasz, and outgoing Beach Handball Commission chairman, Ole R. Jorstad, who are not candidates anymore for the upcoming elections on Friday.

Following the EHF Congress 2016 in St. Wolfgang, Austria, this is the next electoral one and the delegates voted for will remain in their position for four years until 2025. For the 53 positions that will be filled at this congress, 139 nominations from 38 federations have been received and the interest for the top positions in European handball is high.

The remaining ones will be able to follow the event – and eventually also vote – remotely, making the EHF Congress 2021 the first of its kind to be held as a hybrid event with physical and remote attendance. A dedicated hygiene concept has been developed for the congress to minimise the risk of infection with Covid-19 and to comply with the official requirements set by the Austrian health authorities.
