The Capitol police officer who died from injuries suffered during the response to the attack on the building on Wednesday was a South River native. The U.S. Capitol Police said in a statement that Officer Brian D. Sicknick was injured “while physically engaging with protesters during the Wednesday riot. He is the fifth person to die because of the violence fomented after a pro-Trump demonstration. During the melee, Sicknick was hit in the head with a fire extinguisher, two law enforcement officials said. The officials could not discuss the ongoing investigation publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Officer Brian Sicknick, who died late Thursday at a Washington, D.C., hospital of wounds sustained in the riot, served six years in the New Jersey Air National Guard, said Army Lt. Col. Barbara Brown, a spokeswoman for the New Jersey National Guard. He deployed to Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Southern Watch in 1999 and deployed again in 2003 to Kyrgyzstan to support operations in Afghanistan.
