Prime Minister Boris Johnson s Brexit trade deal with the EU has divided opinion, with fishermen in the UK furious with the terms agreed. UK fishing boats will get a larger share of fish, as 25 percent of EU boats fishing rights in UK waters will be transferred to the British fleet over a period of five years. After that, there will be annual negotiations to decide how the catch is shared out between the UK and EU, and Britain would have the right to completely exclude EU boats after 2026. As much as I represent the fishermen – that is my priority – I can appreciate that is a big deal for Jersey’s government.
Mr Thompson claimed France would need approval from the European Commission to change the new agreement.
He said: I met ministers the other night and there is a definite strategy – that is to do everything that Jersey can to abide by the terms of the new TECA, particularly on fisheries, so that we do not give France any reason to go back to the commission and for France to say that this new agreement is not working.

Don Thompson, Chairman of the Jersey Fishermen s Association claimed they were “not celebrating” the Brexit deal achieved by Boris Johnson on Christmas Eve. Jersey, which is not part of the UK, agreed earlier this month to back the deal between the UK and EU, however.

The first Jersey fishing vessel trying to land its catch in France after Brexit was turned away over paperwork.
The crew of L Ecume 2 were told they needed a physical signature from the Government of Jersey verifying their online documentation, the Jersey Fishermen s Association said.
They returned to Jersey to get the signature before being allowed to land.
The island s government said it was working to resolve issues delaying fish exports as fast as we can .
President of the association Don Thompson, said the boat was required by the French to return for verification from Jersey, despite EU systems being designed to work entirely electronically.
