KEYSER - The Mineral County Commission Tuesday appointed Office of Emergency Management director Luke McKenzie to a dual role, naming him part-time county coordinator as well.
Mineral County has been without a coordinator for almost a year with administrative specialist Jess Riden handling many of the duties.
McKenzie was also doing his part, however, handling a lot of grant writing and applying for and receiving approval for over $1.3 million in CARES Act funding for the county.
Tuesday, commission president Richard Lechliter said McKenzie “was already handling part of the job anyway,” and made a motion to appoint him to the position. Commissioner Jerry Whisner seconded the motion, which passed 2-0.
BITS & PIECES: Metcalf seems a good choice for Keyser Council

Judging by what he had to say at the beginning of his first meeting Wednesday, Ron Metcalf would seem to be a good choice for the long-awaited appointment to the fifth seat on the Keyser City Council.
Although I only just met him two weeks ago when he took his oath of office, my first impression was a positive one and I truly hope he makes good on his pledge to: 1. Listen to the people, and 2. Work with the council as a team.
I would caution, however, that the concept of teamwork is not to be confused with a “good old boy network” where everybody gets along because they all publicly agree on everything and want the world to think everything is hunky-dory.

Just when you think things are over …
As I’m sure you have read on our front page today, Curtis Perry has fired off a letter to Mineral County Prosecuting Attorney in response to the statement this week by Keyser’s attorney that the city council acted properly in rescinding his appointment.
The attorney, Scott McClure, said the oath of office was not administered within the allowed time frame (20 days as stipulated by state code but 10 days as set forth in the city’s charter), and Mr. Perry therefore was never officially a member of the council.
