The daughter of late state Sen. Jerry Relph is calling on Minnesota Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka to apologize for holding an in-person post-election party in November.
That s according to the Minnesota Reformer, who spoke with Dana Relph a day after her father, a Republican senator from St. Cloud, died from complications related to the coronavirus.
Jerry Relph, who was 76, is the first Minnesota lawmaker to die from COVID-19. He was among several lawmakers who tested positive for COVID-19 after likely contracting the virus at the Republican election celebration event held in Lake Elmo on Nov. 5.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) A state senator from St. Cloud has died of complications related to COVID-19.
The Star Tribune reports 76-year-old Jerry Relph was the first Minnesota lawmaker to succumb to the virus.
Relph was among a number of Republican legislators who contracted COVID-19 after contact with colleagues in mid-November. At the time, Rachel Aplikowski, the Senate GOP spokeswoman, said Relph tested positive after having had close contact with someone in the chamber who had the virus.
Relph started quarantining on Nov. 10 and did not attend that week’s special session. He was also excused from a special session this week.

Minnesota officials on Monday reported another 22 COVID-19 deaths, continuing an already dreadful December. But other key metrics are showing definite signs of hope.
New daily caseloads and hospital admissions continue to retreat from their late November, early December peaks.
The Health Department posted 1,998 newly confirmed or probable COVID-19 cases the lowest count since late October, part of more than a week of relatively moderate new caseloads. Officials expected a surge originating from Thanksgiving gatherings, but it hasn’t happened yet.
The number of active, confirmed cases in Minnesota is down to around 21,000, the lowest since Nov. 4.
The agency said 1,040 people were in the hospital with COVID-19 as of Sunday, with 237 needing intensive care. While that’s still fairly high, the seven-day trend for new hospital admissions has dropped to levels not seen since early November.
