MONTCLAIR, NJ - The Montclair Township Council s May 4 meeting was expected to be long, due to controversial decisions made for the 2021 municipal budget that would attract dozens of residents to the public comment part, and it was. Concerns from councilors over items up for a vote made the meeting even longer.
Mayor Sean Spiller announced a few amendments to the 2021 budget, set at $93.8 million, and the most notable one was increasing the expenditure for the library system to $419,848, a $100,000 increase. Residents in support of a robust library budget, appalled by the original amount, had planned to call into the virtual meeting an take issue with the library line item. They did so anyway, many pleased with the last-minute increase but still dissatisfied with the size of the increase.
