Lac Ste. Anne County and Mayerthorpe residents are adjusting to tighter restrictions on outdoor social gatherings, schools, retail and more under measured unveiled by Premier Jason Kenney last Tuesday.
The area surpassed 30 COVID-19 cases last Wednesday (currently at 37 by Friday), according to the Alberta governmentâs geospatial tool.

The new restrictions now apply to the county and in Mayerthorpe for at least two more weeks, said Alberta Health spokesman Tom McMillan.

More than 100,000 Albertans booked COVID-19 vaccine appointments on Thursday as the province expanded vaccine eligibility, said Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health. It is “very likely” the four-month wait between doses will shrink, she added, depending on supply.
“It’s very likely that the interval will be shorter than four months,” she said. “The four-month interval was always a maximum. We were never planning to require a wait of four months… We would not have anyone go beyond four months, but if we can offer it sooner, we will.”

On Thursday, Premier Jason Kenney announced new restrictions in “hot spots” where there are at least 350 cases per 100,000 people and more than 250 cases total. Students in grades 7-12 in these areas will move to online learning Monday. Indoor fitness and sport activities were banned as of Friday.
