It has been nearly a year since demonstrators called on Iowa City to restructure a police department that they believe has historically been used to reinforce a white power structure.
On Tuesday, that discussion dominated two meetings of city officials, showing again that there is no clear agreement about what police reform will look like.
The issue at one meeting was whether it would be better to give police officers some discretion over when they carry their handguns on a call: for example, into a school building. Some City Council members and those who serve on a citizen-led police board wondered if armed officers sometimes bring tension into otherwise-benign situations.

Show Transcript Warren Paris and Jerry McConnell met in a class at the Iowa City Senior Center four years ago. I had no intention of being in a relationship with my age. They were just friends until Jerry offered to dog sit for Warren in October of 2019. Sure enough, that s how it all started. Well, he came to get his dog, and he never really left its earned Ginger quite the nickname the matchmaker Aziz. The pandemic got underway. Restrictions were going to keep them apart. Starting at Jerry s apartment could only have a visitor for two weeks and no more than 60 days in a year because they feel that won t work. And as they tried to visit each other in the hospital, he and I had each had hospitalizations during that past year. It was easier just to get married an
