Black-owned restaurants continue to multiply in Palm Beach County
There’s something decidedly retro about celebrating Black history exclusively in February, especially in a county as diverse as Palm Beach County. Surely there are reasons to celebrate Black history and support Black-owned businesses throughout the year.
In that spirit, we offer our running list of Black-owned restaurants in the county. We’ll continue to update it as the dining landscape evolves. We hope this list will prove handy.
McCray’s Backyard Bar-B-Q, Mangonia Park
Barbecue pitmaster Derrick McCray s meat-smoking talents are well regarded beyond Palm Beach County. He s been catering NFL-sanctioned Super Bowl events since 2007. A longtime roadside pitmaster, McCray is the owner of McCray s Backyard Bar-B-Q in Mangonia Park, which and Riviera Beach. The Mangonia Park location, which opened in the summer of 2019, boasts drive-through and takeout windows.
But fallout from the scandal continues.
Jerome Byrd, a former high-ranking member of the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department and one of three finalists for Boynton Beach s fire chief position, claims he was not chosen for the job despite having better credentials and qualifications than the other two candidates.
Byrd, who is Black, said he thinks race played a factor in the decision.
Jim Stables, most recently the fire chief in Johnson City, Tenn., was selected in November to run Boynton Beach s fire department. Stables and the third finalist, La Crosse (Wis.) Fire Chief Ken Gilliam, are white.
Aside from 22 years of experience with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue where he climbed to division chief of operations where he oversaw 17 fire stations, Byrd said he was the only finalist that met the city s preference of a master s degree and executive fire chief certification.
