Late on Friday the EQC Earthquake Commission had only received 27 claims from across the North Island, a spokesman said. The extent of the reported damage is not yet known and assessors are working with customers to resolve the claims.

Coastal residents evacuated to higher ground after tsunami warnings. In Northland where the tsunami waves were expected to be worst, emergency workers and the public reported little damage. Northland Civil Defence spokesman Murray Soljak said he had not heard any reports of damage, although his team would often only be alerted if there was a threat to life as well.

The spectacular scenes of tsunami-caused surges pushing into the Tutukaka marina yesterday were not the biggest the area has seen, according to one long-time local.

Civil Defence early yesterday

Northlanders becoming blase about using the Covid tracer app have had a wake-up call after a woman from the region tested positive after twice returning negative results at a quarantine facility.
The woman, 56, lives just south of Whangārei and travelled with her husband in the southern parts of Northland, to about 30 places around Mangawhai, Dargaville and Helensville, and became symptomatic on January 15.
