Planned ATV Invasion festival is canceled

BERLIN —The Androscoggin Valley ATV Invasion festival, scheduled for July 30 and 31, has been canceled. The news was announced in a release issued Friday by Androscoggin Valley ATV Club President Alex Smith. Smith said the club was unable to obtain adequate insurance coverage for the event and drought conditions at the time created undesirable conditions for the mud pit and other activities. Expected to attract thousands of ATV enthusiasts to the area, plans for the event included mud pit races, an obstacle course, a rally race and a concert. “We have had a team working to create and plan an exceptional event for this summer. This team has dedicated four months filled with long hours to bring the plan to fruition. It is despite these best efforts that circumstances have cut short those plans,” Smith said.

Multi-million dollar investment in state parks will benefit Coos parks

COOS COUNTY — These are exciting times for the state park system which is receiving $22.6 million in federal funding to allow the state to make needed improvements to its aging park infrastructure. Much of the money will go to state parks in Coos County including Jericho Mountain State Park in Berlin and Mollidgewock State Park in Errol. The funding, approved by the Executive Council at its June 16 meeting, comes from the federal American Rescue Act and State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds. Brent Wucher, public information officer for N.H. Parks and Recreation, said the funds will allow the department to catch up on a lot of projects it has been forced to put off because of a lack of funding. He noted the Hampton Beach Redevelopment project in 2009-10 was the last time the department had this kind of money to invest.

ATV parking & trail access changes are working

GORHAM — ATV traffic on Lancaster Road (Route 2) to the state-owned parking lot on the edge of the Presidential Rail Trail has been reduced substantially, reported select board member Judy LeBlanc at Monday evening’s biweekly meeting on June 14. LeBlanc explained that she lives in the neighborhood in which many residents have complained they are badly affected by ATV enthusiasts off-loading and re-loading their OHRVs and gunning their vehicles as they speed off to reach Jericho Mountain State Park in Berlin. Noise levels are also far less. A short stretch of trail alongside the lot up the bridge that replaced the historic pony truss bridge was also paved by the state Trails Bureau, reducing airborne dust.
