Catalytic converters, those emission control devices on the exhaust systems of cars and trucks that cut down the release of pollutants, have long been targeted by thieves.
Recent reports indicate that converters have once again become hot items to steal in parts of the country.
Including Erie County.
Eight converters were cut out of vehicles parked at the Greater Erie Auto Auction in Fairview Township sometime between Feb. 17 and Wednesday, according to the Pennsylvania State Police.
The Erie Bureau of Police took 13 reports of converters stolen from vehicles parked at various locations across the city between Oct. 18 and the end of January. Millcreek Township police are investigating two recent converter thefts.
