KNBN NewsCenter1 March 8, 2021 RAPID CITY, S.D. 2020 was a different kind of year for all of us – including law enforcement – a point illustrated in the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office annual report. The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office was faced with multiple challenges in 2020 – with presidential visits and protests – all while dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. PCSO responded to over 32,000 citizen calls for service and over 12,000 deputy calls to service. Sheriff Kevin Thom, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, said, “In spite of COVID-19, calls for service and crime didn’t stop. It continued to respond and provide services to our community.”

Pennington County Sheriff s Office is looking to hire more female officers

KNBN NewsCenter1 March 8, 2021 RAPID CITY, S.D. Statistics from the FBI show that only 12% of full time law enforcement officers in the United States are female – something that Rapid City is trying to change. Certain positions in law enforcement require female officers, such as at the jail, where female officers are needed to interact with female inmates, and male officers with male inmates. Pennington County Sheriff’s Office currently has six female patrol officers and are looking to grow that number in the future. Certain scenarios make female officers easier to talk to, especially for women and children suffering from abuse.
