Superintendent Lucas receives good evaluation from BOE

LOGAN — Logan County Schools Superintendent Patricia Lucas “met or exceeded” her yearly goals per her evaluation by members of the Logan County Board of Education on Friday, Feb. 19. Every year, per state law, board members from each of the 55 county school districts in the state evaluate their superintendent on several categories, such as general state-mandated issues like improvements in student achievement and personnel matters and other local goals and objectives established by board members. On Friday, Feb. 19, the five members of the LCBOE — with Debbie Mendez participating by telephone — evaluated Lucas, going into executive session for about two hours. LCBOE President Jeremy Farley said the members were with Lucas as they evaluated her yearly performance, giving her a chance to discuss both strengths and challenges over the past year regarding goals.

Akers honored at his last commission meeting

LOGAN — The Logan County Commission presented a proclamation honoring outgoing commissioner Willie Akers during his final regular session Thursday, Dec. 17. A graduate of the former Mullens High School in Wyoming County, Akers came to Logan County around 1961 after playing for the West Virginia University men’s basketball team from 1957 through 1960. He played alongside basketball legend Jerry West, advancing the team to a No. 1 ranking in the 1958 season. During his 25 years as a basketball coach at Logan High School, he led the Wildcats boys basketball team to four AAA state championship titles — 1964, 1977, 1978 and 1983. He also had a few state runners-up titles under his belt, including 1963 and 1979.

Logan County Schools transitions to remote learning as COVID-19 cases rise

LOGAN — All schools in Logan County will operate on a remote learning basis until after the Christmas holiday break, Logan County Board of Education President Jeremy Farley announced Saturday evening. The move comes even as Logan County showed a green rating — the lowest possible — on the West Virginia Department of Education’s most recent update of their education alert map on Saturday. Despite the green rating, Logan County’s COVID-19 numbers continue to rise. On Monday, there were 31 new cases of the virus confirmed with an active count of 150 cases, the highest since September. There were 20 more new cases confirmed by laboratory testing Tuesday for a cumulative total of 1,276 cases, 1,078 recoveries and 54 deaths. The number of cases considered active was down slightly from Monday to 144. There was also one less hospitalization on Tuesday, with 18 on Monday and 17 on Tuesday.
