The new minor league seasons means lots of firsts in the Oakland A’s farm system, especially new prospects making their pro debuts and younger names arriving in full-season ball for the first time. A few such players stood out on Wednesday.
Low-A Stockton
(win 8-3)
The Stockton Ports had a fun day on offense, collecting 11 hits and nine walks while stealing seven bases.
Leading the charge was
Lawrence Butler (6th round, 2018, out of high school), who is making his full-season debut this year. Every inning that Stockton scored, the rally began with a walk by Butler, four times in total thrice he was the first runner, and once he was the second runner of the frame. He also stole three bags.

The minor leagues return today! Opening Day is Tuesday for most levels of the Oakland A’s farm system, marking the first time we’ve seen minors baseball since 2019 after last summer was canceled entirely amid the pandemic.
Over the last few days we’ve gotten projected 2021 rosters from the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators, High-A Lansing Lugnuts, and Low-A Stockton Ports. Now we have a glimpse of what Double-A will bring, as the Midland RockHounds announced their latest roster on Monday.

Our 2021 Community Prospect List adds its final member, and an excellent sleeper choice in pitcher Parker Dunshee. Here’s the current list, including their winning margins (the difference between his % of the vote, and the % of the runner-up):
A.J. Puk, LHP (+42%)
Tyler Baum, RHP (+1%)
Parker Dunshee, RHP (+24%)
For the first couple years of his pro career, Dunshee was untouchable. He literally blanked short-season Low-A with a 0.00 ERA in nearly 40 innings, then breezed through High-A and Double-A. Alongside fellow mid-round 2017 draftee Howard, the pair quickly endeared themselves to me as my new favorite sleepers. I’m sticking with them until the end, one way or other.
