© NordicFocus Japan’s Akito Watabe has claimed his third individual World Cup win in Lahti and now holds 19 World Cup wins, the same number as Japanese legend Kenji Ogiwara. Watabe claimed a secure win, +10.8 seconds ahead of Jarl Magnus Riiber, who finally reached his first podium result in Lahti. The surprise of the day was young Japanese Ryota Yamamoto who earned his maiden podium in third, +25.1 seconds behind his teammate. Yamamoto was the best jumper once again with a jump of 126 metres and 132.3 points. He claimed a narrow head start of one second on his teammate Akito Watabe who showed 129.5 metres (132.1 p.). Jarl Magnus Riiber had the longest jump of the day with 130 metres and 125.4 points and started his race from position three and a delay of 28 seconds.

Sunday, 24 January 2021 Superb jumping, tactical acumen and sheer nerve enabled Japan’s Akito Watabe to earn his first individual victory of the season at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Nordic Combined World Cup in the Finnish city Lahti. Watabe thus drew level on 19 career World Cup wins with legendary fellow countryman Kenji Ogiwara, who won Olympic relay gold at the Albertville 1992 and Lillehammer 1994 Winter Olympic Games. Himself a double Olympic silver medallist, Watabe finished 10.8sec clear of Norway’s Jarl Magnus Riiber after covering the second half of the concluding 10 kilometres cross-country on his own. After producing the second-best jump of the day into a prevailing  headwind - 129.5 metres earning him 132.1 points - Watabe had begun the cross-country just a second behind his young compatriot Ryota Yamamoto, who jumped 126m to earn 132.3 points.

The Japanese jumped 126 metres and collected a total of 121.2 points for his efforts. If the PCR has to be used in case of bad weather, he will have an advantage of 24 seconds on Espen Bjørnstad, who jumped 129 metres but only received 115.3 points in better wind conditions. Yoshito Watabe was third with 124.5 metres (114.7 p.) and would begin his race 26 seconds after his teammate. France’s Laurent Muhlethaler continued in strong jumping shape with 123.5 metres and claimed rank five ahead of Terence Weber on rank six.

With brilliant tactical racing, the Norwegian World Cup leader managed to set himself up for success in a finish line sprint agains the German duo of Eric Frenzel and Vinzenz Geiger. He beat the two by 0.1 seconds and a photo finish had to decide ranks two and three between the Germans. A nice round of jumping produced an incredibly tight result for the cross-country race. Japan’s Ryota Yamamoto returned to the pole position after he occupied the spot together with teammate Hideaki Nagai already in yesterday’s Team Sprint.
