At last, the government and the Reserve Bank are singing from the same song sheet. Both say they will keep supporting the economy (the government with big deficits, the Reserve Bank with ultra-low interest rates) until the unemployment rate is well below 5%.
Australia s leading economists back them.
Of the 60 leading economists surveyed by the Economic Society ahead of the budget, more than 60% wanted stimulus until the unemployment rate was below 5%.
One in five economists wanted stimulus until the rate was below 4%. Five wanted a rate below 3%.

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Delicately-made ox-shaped cookies have started rolling out of the oven in Jenny Lye’s kitchen in time for her family and friends to usher in the Year of the Ox.
The 54-year-old housewife, who started baking about 15 years ago, said she did not bake in large quantities.
This is because shaping the horns, nose and eyes on each portion of the dough takes up a lot of time.
“It is based on a German cookie recipe using butter, icing sugar, potato starch and plain flour.
