immigration detention centers: Biden officials kept ICE jails running despite internal cost concerns; could ve saved $235 million

The Biden administration considered closing or downsizing nine immigration detention centers last year due to high costs and staffing shortages, which could have saved $235 million, according to a draft memo from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). However, ultimately only two of the centers were shut down. The memo, reviewed by Reuters, did not include the recommendation to close the Torrance County Detention Facility in New Mexico, which had been flagged for critical staffing shortages and unsanitary conditions.
