Bolder clean air laws would be game-changer in protecting health – campaigners | Dumbarton and Vale of Leven Reporter

Committing to bolder clean air laws would be a “game-changer”, campaigners have said in the wake of a coroner’s report into the death of a nine-year-old girl after exposure to toxic air. The Government is under pressure to introduce new legal targets for dangerous air pollution known as particulate matter that are in line with World Health Organisation guidelines. The coroner in the case of Ella Kissi-Debrah, who died from a fatal asthma attack after being exposed to toxic air for years, has said national limits were set far higher than WHO guidelines. In a prevention of further deaths report, assistant coroner Philip Barlow said legal targets in line with the guidelines would reduce the number of deaths from air pollution in the UK, and the Government should take action on the issue.

Leeds Bradford Airport expansion public enquiry delayed

THE choice to hold a public inquiry into Leeds Bradford Airport s expansion has suffered a delay. A decision by Secretary of State Robert Jenrick on whether to ‘call in’ the proposed expansion of Leeds Bradford Airport was expected this week. However, the Group for Action on Leeds Bradford Airport (GALBA) was told by the Department for Housing, Communities and Local Government that the decision has been delayed for an unspecified amount of time. Chris Foren, chair of GALBA, said: “Over the last few weeks we have seen environmental groups, community groups, MPs, scientists and literally thousands of people, writing directly to the Secretary of State asking for a public inquiry. Thousands more have signed our petition.
