Ancient is modern: W&M professor talks teaching classics

Williams |  May 5, 2021 William & Mary faculty member Molly Swetnam-Burland teaches courses on Roman archaeology and art, the cities of Rome and Pompeii and Latin language and literature. She researches in the areas of Roman fresco and sculpture. She has published articles and books on Roman Egyptianizing artworks and is working on a new project examining the evidence for imperial freedmen, who ran life behind the scenes in imperial palaces. Swetnam-Burland was honored with the 2020 Award for Excellence in Teaching of the Classics at the College Level by the Society for Classical Studies. The Adina Allen Term Distinguished Associate Professor at W&M, Swetnam-Burland received the honor the most prestigious teaching award for classical studies professors in North America in January. W&M honors dedicated degree navigator with Duke Award

If a student has earned the credits to graduate, Wendy Urbano has shepherded every single one of them along to make sure it happens. For her twin superpowers of meticulous proficiency and great attitude while doing it, Urbano, manager of academic and degree progress in the Office of the Registrar, will be honored with the 2021 Charles and Virginia Duke Award. The award recognizes outstanding employees for exemplary individual accomplishments in their professional lives and service to the William & Mary community.” Urbano will officially be recognized at Commencement on May 21-23. She is one of two people to receive Duke Awards this year. The other is Darlene White, a lead custodian on W&M’s Historic Campus.

Marine, firefighter, doctor: W&M grad follows unconventional path

Carving his own path:  Evan Kikla 21 went from a less-than-stellar high school student to the Marine Corps, wildland fire fighting out West and then to William & Mary to study biology. After graduating on May 23, he will enter medical school in the fall. COVID-19 one year later: W&M students assist local businesses

Photo - of - by Jennifer L. Williams |  April 8, 2021 When COVID-19 started negatively impacting the economy a year ago, William & Mary M.B.A. students stepped up to help local small businesses. That effort to provide free support services quickly grew into a partnership now coming up on its first anniversary between the Raymond A. Mason School of Business and the Hampton Roads Small Business Development Center. Known as the CrimDell Small Business Network, the student-led organization gives participants an opportunity to work in pairs to help local small businesses strategize. Projects have included market research, marketing planning, IT consulting, strategy consulting, financial services and on-demand services.
