Can we trust Port to work in our interests?
Re “San Diego’s bayfront is controlled by a little-understood agency with power that will be tested in new year” (Feb. 7): I would like to thank Jennifer Van Grove for her informative article on the Port of San Diego. The article brings up a very significant conflict regarding how the Port can protect San Diego’s coastal properties and profit at the same time to provide Port funding.
The agency’s board of non-elected officials has total oversight of the region’s best waterfront real estate assets. How do we ensure the Port has the best interests of San Diego residents in mind? This is a huge question when you look at the proposed development of hotels, shops and office space along the waterfront. Since the land was granted to the Port on behalf of the public, it is unclear how any of this high-scale development benefits the residents, especially the increasing Downtown population of more than 30,000, who enjoy the waterfront
