With astonishing speed, the video communications platform has gone from a niche business tool to the default mode of communications for private companies, governments, academic institutions, and artists, as well as individuals catching up with family and friends. To “Zoom” with someone, for the past nine months, has often been more or less the only way to speak with them.
Given the way it is used, Zoom might seem like a neutral piece of communications infrastructure, akin to your cellphone or cable service provider, rather than a social network or publishing platform like Facebook or Twitter.
