About 181 water systems in Massachusetts will be affected by new EPA limits on PFAS in drinking water. About 95 water systems in the state will now have to address these so-called “forever chemicals” for the first time, a process that can cost millions of dollars.
The new Environmental Protection Agency regulations limit the two most common PFAS chemicals PFOA and PFOS to four parts per trillion in drinking water, close to the level of detection. The agency says the goal for these chemicals should be zero.
