Nearly 4,000 Wilkes-Barre Area elementary school students were treated to a virtual volunteer reading event on Tuesday, March 2, led by 14 guest readers and coordinated by United Way of Wyoming Valley.
The first-of-its-kind event titled âUnited to Readâ was held in conjunction with âRead Across America Week,â a national literacy initiative aimed at drawing attention to the importance of literacy while celebrating the birthday of Theodore Geisel, better known as the famous childrenâs author, Dr. Seuss.
More than 150 classrooms participated in the event. Virtual readings were provided by local celebrity volunteers from across the area including United Way of Wyoming Valleyâs President and CEO, Bill Jones.
