Thursday morning, when Senate Chaplain Barry Black opened the third day of testimony in Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial with a prayer, he implored the Almighty to “speak through the whispers of conscience.” It was a fitting invocation, for what is needed in the Senate chamber now is an honest and solemn response to the still small voice of common grace. We fear, instead, that senators may listen to louder agents in their social media feeds or polling reports, to those telling them how to avoid primary challengers or position themselves for future campaigns, and to those promoting party over country.
