PERRY TOWNSHIP A woman in the 1100 block of West Perry Street reported at 11:28 p.m. Saturday that a neighbor was playing music loudly in a vehicle. An officer spoke with the person in the vehicle and told him to turn it down. Police were dispatched at 8 p.m. Saturday to the 900 block of Elberon Avenue for a report of possible shots fired, but found and heard nothing in the area. A caller at 9:24 a.m. Saturday reported a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot in the 1300 block of Pembrooke Drive. Police identified the driver, who said he was waiting to pick up a friend.
The city of Topeka is shutting down its police impound lot and privatizing impound services.
Thursday will be the last day of operation for the lot the department has maintained for years at 322 N.W. Crane along the riverfront, it announced Tuesday on its Facebook page.
The department said Heartland Recovery Inc., 2036 S.E. Quincy, was chosen through a competitive bidding process to provide impound services for the city.
The change was made to deal with budgetary constraints, said police Lt. Jennifer Cross. It s a pretty big shift in procedure, she acknowledged.
The city intends after closing the former impound lot to keep vehicles there from various city departments, Cross said.
